I-mari Became an Idol! is the 1st episode of the Idol Land PriPara series. It aired on August 18, 2021.
Synopsis[]
Amari Katasumi is a lonely girl who doesn't stand out and struggles to socialize. One day she comes across her childhood idol notebook, then it gets into the possession of a strangely familiar purple-haired girl...
Summary[]
Amari is a lonely tenth grader who gets left out frequently. She attends the most prestigious school in Papparajuku: Basilico Private Academy. This school expects a lot from its students and the dignity they must continue exuding in order to uphold its good name. She came here for a fresh start, but so far nothing seems different. She listens to some classmates discussing a rumor going around and decides to try being friends by inviting them to the coffeehouse she heard about recently. But when it comes time to say anything, she flubs spectacularly and runs out of the room a flustered mess.
Amari arrives to her messy, single-person dorm room -the only one of its kind- and thinks about how as of late she's been finding it too hard to keep trying. When she began there she was doing so much to make her time here fulfilling, but she gave up on everything and now she just wants the remaining three years to pass by so that she can leave. The only thing that seems to bring her comfort is the wasabi mayo she loves to eat. Rather then waste any more time sulking Amari gets up to play a game, but in the process she bumps her head on the ceiling above her bed and runs right into a tall stack of books. Spread out on the floor with them, she happens to come across an Idol Notebook she made years back when she was younger, and she is very surprised as she had no idea it was packed with the other books. She blames it for causing her so many problems and she curiously begins to overlook her old drawings. She would draw in it all the time, and she spent hours practicing her song and dance. She wonders what made her think she could be an idol, and she recalls making a fool of herself for announcing it in middle school.
Since then she felt so lonely and excluded.
It's then she realizes a portion of this book also entails her Chuuni phase and she becomes horrible embarrassed. She would escape to the school bunnies for sanctuary and speak to them as if they were her minions or old friends, and she developed an edgy conceptual story known as Fullmetal Rabbit. If anyone was to find this out it would be social suicide, and with that Amari comes to the conclusion that she has to hide it now. She gets up and frantically runs through the halls until she gets outside, where she plans on burying it. But just as she prepares to do so, the notebook has gone missing. Amari panics and tries to look for it as a young girl with purple hair points out some characteristics Amari casually agrees with; until she says "bunny ears", causing her to stop and look. Realizing the girl has her notebook Amari demands it back. The girl agrees, then she goes on to ask Amari if she wants to be an idol. Amari tries to deny it and comments that someone so plain and left out couldn't be an idol, she then goes on to assume the girl must be in primary school because of how short and youthful she is. She is taken-back by how loudly Laala introduces herself as a sixth grader, then Laala goes on to ask for her name. Amari introduces herself and Laala goes on to suggest she go to Pripara- only to stop realizing she has to keep it a secret.
She proceeds to follow Amari into town while asking her if she likes to sing and dance, and if she wants to be like the her in her notebook. Amari asks her to stop following her and claims she has a lot of things to do at home -actually she wants to find somewhere to bury the book- but Laala insists that she come with her in order to become an idol. She continues to follow Amari around despite protests to try to persuade her. She watches her browse a stand of girly magazines, joins her for a meal at a fast food place, at an arcade, and a park as she plays a game on her phone. Amari becomes confused realizing she's said "ParaPeli" and "PlayPri", words that aren't right but seem familiar and she wonders why that is as Laala laments being unable to tell her the truth. Suddenly, she envisions three girls dancing and she snaps at Laala, saying that because PriPara doesn't exist anymore she can't be an idol. Amari is shocked as Laala expresses joy and embraces her, glad Amari remembered. As she demands an answer, a rainbow beam of light shoots out towards her phone and a brand new app is installed. Laala thanks Jululu for the help and she leads Amari to a brand new location marked on her phone.
They arrive to a manhole cover with a glowing heart on it and Laala summons the idol key, which comes out from the app and she uses it to open the gate. Amari is frightened as Laala grabs her hand and pulls her in, and the girls fall towards PriPara as she helplessly wonders what happened. Meganee appears using a jetpack and compliments Laala for getting Amari there, then she quickly scans her and looks at the notebook -which Laala managed to obtain again- to come up with a brand for her known as "Hysteric Bunny". They are unaware of Amari's chuuni page ripping out and floating somewhere in PriPara as Meganee remarks that Amari is the first person to match up with this brand in many years. In a flash of light, Amari suddenly transforms to look similar to her drawings.
The girls come to a landing and Amari is horrified as she overlooks herself. She can barely make sense of what happened, especially when she looks on to see Laala has become much older. As she tells her that she is now in PriPara, Amari takes a moment to observe her surroundings and recalls being here before. They are joined by Mirei and Sophy and she is very shocked to see them, along with Dressing Pafe. Together the two groups sit down for some drinks and snacks and Laala asks Amari if she remembers PriPara now. She admits that she does, but she wonders how she could forget; she remembered seeing them perform all this time and how it inspired her to become a sparkling idol one day.
But if she loved PriPara so much she wonders how she could forget it. They are joined by Meganii, who offers to explain. He starts by saying that this PriPara isn't the one she remembers because during an update a bug occurred in the system and erased the memories of everyone outside of PriPara at the time. Now they require more idols -precisely their sparkle- to repower PriPara to return it to normal, which is why various people have been sent out to recruit new and old idols to join. Amari has trouble wrapping her head around the entire story, but she's not given very long to think about it when the girls remind her that she has a debut performance to put on now. Amari nervously doens't think she could manage but they encourage her to go for it because it will help Pripara, and a dear friend of theirs who currently sleeps and cannot be awoken. Amari is shocked to learn its Yui but she continues to refuse until Nino and Miichirou join them to continue asking her to consider it. They can't go on as a group without Yui and this performance might be the thing necessary to help her. Amari isn't sure of how to respond, as nobody has ever relied on her before.
She begins to consider giving it a shot but is afraid she'll mess up; but Laala gives her little choice, running right to the machine with the others behind them before she can refuse again. They get her into the machine, where its revealed PriTickets are no longer used as of this update, but a key that gets inserted into the microphone. Meganii arrives to lend a hand and he provides Amari with a song she can use for the concert. Having no choice at this point, Amari inserts the key into her mic as instructed and she changes coords. She appears on stage and everyone cheers for her but Amari is so nervous that she starts to panic. She tries encouraging herself by telling them her dream of becoming a sparkling idol, but when its met with silence she worries further, until they begin to cheer even louder for her. This fills Amari with enough courage to give it her best shot, and she goes on to perform "Chaotic Hurricane".
In the process Amari performs the first every Cyalume Hurricane that whips around the audience, but nobody is even frightened. By the time the performance ends, they are amazed by Amari's powerful performance as she lays in a daze wondering what happened. She receives several Likes that shoot into the air to form a key, and everyone rushes outside to see if its enough to awaken Yui from the chamber she's trapped within. Unfortunately this doesn't seem to work, much to their sadness.
Laala remains hopeful though, and with it now going on six pm everyone must return home for the day. Before they leave Laala and Amari share their friend keys with each other. Amari gets tossed onto her bed and she finds the key and notebook in her hands. Recognizing the location she wonders if it was a dream, but she acknowledges it couldn't be and she recalls watching the girls when she was in primary school and how everything was the same. Just as something dons on her, Amari bangs her head on the ceiling again.
